Mercado Hidalgo: A Culinary and Cultural Tapestry of Tijuana

Recently I had the opportunity to travel for the first time to Oaxaca. In looking for things to do while there, what became overwhelmingly clear was that a visit to Oaxaca was not complete without visiting its various markets. A few weeks later, upon returning to Baja, I had reason to be in Tijuana. With some extra time on my hands, I decided to swing by one of my favorite places in Tijuana and that’s when it hit me - you don’t have to go all the way to Oaxaca for amazing and authentic Mexican markets! Without even buying a plane ticket, you can have a taste of ‘real Mexico,’ just across the border: Tijuana’s Mercado Hidalgo.

The market's namesake, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, was a pivotal figure in Mexico's War of Independence. A Catholic priest and revolutionary leader, Hidalgo's "Grito de Dolores" in 1810 ignited the struggle for independence from Spanish colonial rule- commemorated each year on midnight of September 15 to celebrate Mexican Independence. His courage and vision inspired a generation of Mexicans to fight for their freedom, making him a revered national hero and considered a father of the nation.

Mercado Hidalgo, a vibrant and historic market nestled right in the heart of Tijuana, offers a captivating blend of culinary delights, cultural immersion, and artisanal treasures. Established in 1955, this bustling market has become part of the border city’s identity, serving as a testament to Tijuana’s rich heritage from across Mexico and culinary diversity while offering visitors a blend of traditional Mexican flavors, treasures, and a warm inviting atmosphere.

The market's origins trace back to a group of 58 families who sought to create a space to showcase typical regional products in one of the most important zones of the border city. Today there are over 80 stalls. Each stall offers a unique glimpse into Mexico's traditions, from regional specialties to time-honored recipes, offering an array of flavors and textures - just a stone’s throw from the border. The stalls are family run and passed down from generation to generation. For many of the vendors, the market is their second home.

As you step into Mercado Hidalgo, you'll be immediately captivated by the vibrant atmosphere, colorful flags flying, the aroma of chilies, and the colorful tapestry of sights and sounds. It evokes the charm of traditional Mexico. But from the outside one would never have any idea of what is hidden within the large walls. The mercado takes up an entire city block in the heart of Tijuana, but is bounded by large block walls. There are entry points on three of the four sides, which lead to plentiful and secure parking inside. Once you enter the market's atmosphere is infectious, drawing visitors in with its warmth and charm.

One of the greatest draws of Mercado Hidalgo is its diverse culinary offerings. From street food vendors just outside the gates (Tacos Fitos has some of the best birria tacos you will get anywhere!) to established eateries inside the market’s walls such as Carnitas Kiko’s Jr, it is a feast for the senses. Whether it is Tortas, burritos or quesadillas you are craving - or perhaps something a little fresher like mango with chili, the market has something to offer. Or, if you’d rather, you can find a huge selection of different mole pastes (from sweet to spicy and in between) to take home and prepare your own comida en casa. (Just make sure you don’t take prohibited items back north across the border!)

But beyond its gastronomic delights, Mercado Hidalgo is a treasure trove of artisanal goods as well. From serapes to ceramics to kitchen accessories such as a tortilla press or a molcajete - it is all there for the browsing. Hurraches? Every size and style you could want without having to take a trip to Jalisco. Other stalls are full of any piñata you could imagine - and the sweets to fill them with. On one corner of the market is a ‘botanica’ that has various traditional remedies, teas, creams, and incense for sale.

The market also features a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe and each year around Dia del Los Muertos (November 1) an altar dedicated to remembering the market ‘family’ who have passed.

• Arrive early: The market can get crowded, especially on weekends.

• Take an overview walk first: It can be easy to get overwhelmed! I recommend taking a stroll around the entire market first, then going back for a second round to stop in at the stalls that interest you.
