Emma Cornwell on Racing, Her Roots, and the Peninsula That Made Her

I never had a chance of escaping desert racing in Baja. It was written into me long before I knew what it meant.

My dad raced in the 70s and 80s in Class 1, and he overalled the very first San Felipe 250 in 1982. Growing up, I thought he was just the coolest person alive, with the best stories to match. I wanted to be exactly like him, and more than anything, I wanted to build my own stories. Baja was always the backdrop.

My first real trip down was around 2009 or 2010. I was 13 or 14 years old, and my dad took me to San Felipe to watch the start of the San Felipe 250. It was his first race in over 15 years, and our first time seeing the new Trophy Trucks in action. The camaraderie between the teams, the good energy from the fans, the hum of engines in the desert air... I was completely hooked. But watching felt flat almost immediately. I did not want to be a spectator. I wanted in.

I grew up in Chula Vista surrounded by Mexican culture and Hispanic families, so stepping into Baja for the first time did not feel foreign. It felt like coming home. That feeling has never left me. I have brought my own family to Baja, made lifelong friends along the way, and built a relationship with Miss Baja herself. We are so lucky to know this peninsula and the people who call it home.

My relationship with Baja has evolved in ways I never could have predicted. After that first race trip, I went back to college and made my way to Tijuana for a very different kind of adventure. Then in 2017 I returned for racing again, this time to support my dad as he stepped into the role of SCORE Tech Director. I volunteered with the Tech Team for several years. Somewhere in that stretch I also connected with Julie in the border crossing line and joined the Finishline IV crew, providing IV hydration for racers post-race. And somewhere in between all of that, I strapped in as a navigator for my dad at the NORRA 1000, and my racing life truly began.

From there I continued navigating for my dad and my uncle in the SCORE series, putting in miles and learning the craft race by race. Eventually I found my seat next to Kaden Wells, and what started as a racing partnership became a life partnership. We got engaged in Baja, naturally. Together we have won the Overall 4WV Title and three Class Championships, six total for Kaden across his career. Every one of those wins has Baja dust on it.

Racing in Baja is the ultimate test. There is racing in the States, but nothing compares to what the peninsula demands of you. Baja has shaped my strength, my grit, my resilience, and my emotional range in ways nothing else has. The race course does not care about your bad day or your nerves. You either show up ready or you get humbled fast. I love it for exactly that reason.

One of my favorite memories from my early racing days captures Baja perfectly. I was still learning to navigate, still figuring out the GPS, surrounded by miles and miles of open desert, and then suddenly a town appeared out of nowhere. Palm trees. Water. An oasis in the middle of nothing. It felt surreal and almost magical, and I have never forgotten that moment. Baja has a way of surprising you just when you think you have figured it out.

Baja makes me feel. As people, we are always searching for something, looking for love, for awe, for a sense of belonging to something larger than ourselves. Baja delivers all of it. The undisturbed beauty, the remote stretches where the rest of the world completely falls away, the warmth of the people, the rawness of the land. It is unlike anywhere else on the planet.

A perfect day in Baja can look like a lot of things for me. It might be a bachelorette morning in Cabo waking up to the sound of the ocean with coffee in hand, then transitioning to a natural lime margarita with a Tajin rim on a boat by the arches. It might be a solid 100 to 120 mile pre-run day in San Felipe, snacks out in the desert, laughing with the crew, hunting for lines and soaking up every mile. Finish it off in the pool with a La Vaquita margarita and a Tajin rim and I am a happy woman. Or it might be driving down with my parents, stopping in Rosarito for margs by the water, cruising into Ensenada and walking the main strip with good food and good company. The common thread is always the same: the ocean, a Tajin rim on something cold, my family by my side, and the desert nearby. Add a winning flag at the end of a race day and champagne spraying next to my husband and both of our families, and that is perfection.

For anyone who has never been: if you love tacos, great margaritas, natural beauty, off-road culture, and a relaxed pace of life, Baja is calling your name. Go. Immerse yourself in the culture. Try to speak a little Spanish. Treat Baja and its people the way you would want to be treated, and you will never find yourself in trouble. Keep your passport on you, follow the rules, and open your eyes to everything the peninsula has to offer. Honestly, I will even go with you.

The food, the views, the people, the adventures, the feelings, the challenges. That is what keeps me coming back year after year. Baja gave me my roots in racing, my husband, my most treasured memories, and a place that will always feel like home. I cannot imagine my story without it.
